Bathing rules in Islam – Thaharah or purity (clean) is the basic jurisprudence that Muslims must learn. Thaharah is a condition that a person must meet before performing worship.

When a person has a great impurity, then he is obliged to take a big bath to return to purity. While small hadas are quite purified by performing ablution. Some things that make a person a big impurity, namely:

1. Semen comes out.
2. Meet two genitals.
3. Menstrual bleeding.
4. The release of Nifas blood.
5. Giving birth.
6. Died

Then, how is the correct obligatory bath? Here is the explanation of Ustaz Muhammad Saiyid Mahadhir (Indonesian Fiqh House instructor) quoted from rumahfiqih . There are three important things to know and of course it is obligatory to do so that our obligatory bathing activities are legal. All three are:
1. Intentions mandatory
2. Removes feces attached to the body (if any)
3. Flatten water all over the body

If this is done three times, then the obligatory bath is done, and the condition of major hadas is gone. However, since this bathing activity is included in the realm of worship, then for the perfection of this bathing worship, let’s take a look at the technical details of this obligatory bath that the author compiled from Kitab Al-Majmu ‘volume 2, p. 177-195.


Based on the hadith Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam narrated by’ A’ishah and Maimunah RA issued by Imam Al -Bukhari and Muslim, as well as the hadith of Jubair bin Muth’im issued by Imam Ahmad, Imam As-Syairozi began to explain which was later explained by Imam An-Nawawi that the technical obligatory bath is as follows:

1. It starts with the basmalah and the intention of obligatory bathing.

2. Wash both palms three times.

3. Wash the genitals, to remove feces both front and back. Because it may be that there is still a trace of semen around the front genitals, or it may be before the bath to do the BAB activity first so it must be ensured that after the BAB is washed clean.

Especially for women who take a bath after menstruation or childbirth, it is highly recommended to clean the remnants of the faeces with something fragrant, whether bath soap, oil, and so on.

4. Ablution is like ablution prayer. It’s just that there is a slight difference between the scholars, whether washing his feet first or ending after bathing. But whichever option is chosen is all justified, therefore it is still called ablution, and the ablution remains valid. These include the option to end ablution.

5. Take water and rub the fingers into the hairline to the scalp and beard (for those who have). To ensure that no part of the body is exposed to water. In addition, women’s long and thick hair, or men’s beards that are sometimes thicker and longer than their hair should also be given more attention.

6. Wash the head three times, to ensure that all hair and scalp are exposed to water.

7. Then flatten the water all over the body while rubbing the hands all over the body, and starting from the right side of the body, three times.

8. Move from place to place, then wash both feet. Because it is feared that the inside of the soles of the feet is not exposed to water.

If you have taken a bath, do you need ablution again?
According to the Syafi’i School, if you have taken a bath it is obligatory and does not end with urination or defecation. it is valid, and can perform the prayer after it.

If at the beginning of the bath has started with ablution and does not end with urination or large then the bath is valid, and after that can also perform the prayer.

If you worry that usually in at the end of the bath there is still defecation, then then the ablution is performed at the end only, that is also valid. And if the ablution is at the beginning and then after the end of the ablution bath again, that is also valid.

Keep in mind that ablution in the obligatory bath is not a compulsory thing, especially in the Syafi’i school. There are only three obligations, namely intention, removing feces and leveling the water throughout the body.
